HMRC Tax Return – 4c: Self-Employment Adjustments & Final Details

Due to the nature of the tax system, we cannot provide information covering each eventuality within the tax guide. With tax matters, everyone is different, and not all questions listed below may appear on your return. Where your circumstances are more complex than just standard employment and self employment, seek professional assistance to complete your return.

This final page covers tax adjustments, allowances, and compliance questions. Most Slimming World consultants will leave many of these sections blank.

Capital Allowances and Balancing Charges

Capital allowances are tax reliefs you can claim on certain business assets (such as equipment, vehicles, or machinery) instead of claiming them as regular expenses.

Balancing charges arise when you sell or dispose of an asset you previously claimed capital allowances on.

For most Slimming World consultants: Leave this section blank. You’ll have already included your equipment purchases (tablets, scales, etc.) in your regular business expenses.

Capital allowances are more relevant for businesses with significant equipment purchases (such as commercial vehicles or expensive machinery).

If you think capital allowances might apply to your business, click the ‘Help’ button on the HMRC form or consult an accountant.

Other Tax Adjustments

Goods or Services for Your Own Use

If you bought something for business use but then started using it only for personal use, you should declare the value here.

Example: You bought a tablet for business use (and claimed it as a business expense), but you’ve now started using it exclusively for personal purposes.

This is usually left blank for consultants.

Loss Brought Forward from Earlier Years Set-Off Against 2024-25 Profits

If you made a loss in a previous tax year and want to offset it against this year’s profits, enter the amount here.

Check your previous tax return to see if you have losses available to carry forward.

If you didn’t make a loss last year, leave this blank.

Losses

Important for Cash Basis Users: If you answered YES to using cash basis accounting (which most consultants do), you CANNOT claim the following loss reliefs. Leave these sections blank.

Loss from This Tax Year Set-Off Against Other Income for 2024-25

Leave blank – this cannot be claimed if you use cash basis accounting.

Loss to Be Carried Back to Previous Year(s) and Set-Off Against Income (or Capital Gains)

Leave blank – this cannot be claimed if you use cash basis accounting.

Total Loss to Carry Forward After All Other Set-Offs Including Unused Losses Brought Forward

Leave blank – this cannot be claimed if you use cash basis accounting.

If you use cash basis (which is recommended for consultants), losses are handled automatically by HMRC through your Self Assessment calculation.

CIS: Tax Deductions (Construction Industry Scheme)

The Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) is for businesses in the construction industry. Tax is deducted from payments made to subcontractors.

This section is not relevant for Slimming World consultants. Leave blank.

Class 4 National Insurance Contributions

Most self-employed people pay Class 4 National Insurance Contributions on their profits.

However, there are some exemptions. If any of the following apply to you, select the relevant option:

  • I was under 16 years old at the start of the tax year
  • I am over State Pension age at the start of the tax year
  • I am not resident in the UK for tax purposes
  • I do not have to pay Class 4 NICs for another reason (click Help for examples)
  • I have a certificate of exception from paying Class 4 NICs
  • I want to apply for exception from paying Class 4 NICs

If none of these apply to you, select “None apply”.

For most Slimming World consultants: Select “None apply” – you should pay Class 4 NICs on your profits if they exceed the Lower Profits Limit.

Class 2 National Insurance Contributions

Class 2 NICs are fixed weekly contributions that self-employed people pay (currently £3.45 per week for 2024/25).

From April 2024, Class 2 NICs are voluntary if your profits are below the Small Profits Threshold (£12,570 for 2024/25).

If your profits are above this threshold, Class 2 NICs are calculated automatically by HMRC – you don’t need to do anything.

If your profits are below the threshold but you want to pay Class 2 NICs voluntarily (to protect your State Pension and other benefits), you would have indicated this in the special circumstances section on Page 1.

Any Other Information

This is a free text box where you can add any additional information you think HMRC should know about your self-employment.

Examples of when you might use this:

  • Explaining unusual circumstances that affected your business during the year
  • Providing context for significant changes in income or expenses
  • Clarifying complex situations that don’t fit neatly into other sections

Most consultants leave this blank.

Note: HMRC rarely responds to information in this box. If you need a response from HMRC about something specific, it’s better to contact them separately rather than relying on this box.

Completing This Section

Once you’ve completed all relevant fields (which for most consultants means leaving most sections blank), click “Save and continue”.

Your self-employment section is now complete!
