Amend a Tax Return

If you’ve noticed an error or omission from your tax return, or need to add something at a later time, you can amend your tax return. There are restrictions for amendments as well as timeframes.

Changes must be made by the following January after the submission deadline.

Tax YearSubmission DeadlineAmendment Deadline
2020/2131 January 202231 January 2023
2021/2231 January 202331 January 2024
2022/2331 January 202431 January 2025

After submission of any changes, your tax calculation will be updated. This can take a few days, and HMRC will provide an updated statement showing your new tax liability.

  • If you’re due a refund, HMRC will process this on your account. You can then request a repayment online using your personal tax account
  • If you’re due to pay more tax, HMRC will calculate the relevant amount. Interest may be due on any additional payments

How to amend

Depending on how you submitted your return, you’ll need to make amendments in a different way.

If you used HMRC’s system to submit your tax return

  1. Sign in using your Government Gateway user ID and password.
  2. From ‘Your tax account’, choose ’Self Assessment account’ (if you do not see this, skip this step).
  3. Choose ‘More Self Assessment details’.
  4. Choose ‘At a glance’ from the left-hand menu.
  5. Choose ‘Tax return options’.
  6. Choose the tax year for the return you want to amend.
  7. Go into the tax return, make the corrections and file it again.
